| D.Werner Schmidt's passion for astronomy was sparked as a young teen. On special summer nights, at his friend Brigitte's house, he and "Brig" would listen intently as her grandfather told stories about the night sky and many of the mysteries it held. Although he never owned a telescope, her grandfather was remarkably informed about facts and figures pertaining to the planets, stars, galaxies, and nebulae. They were very good friends, Werner and Brigitte, and they would continue to share their interest in the universe and other topics over the years. As they grew into adulthood, they fell in love, and married.
In addition to astronomy, German born Werner became fascinated with engineering. The son of an expert machinist, Werner learned at an early age the wisdom of function and aesthetics in design. His father would often tell him, "A truly superb design not only achieves a functional end. It must also appeal to all of the senses that interact with it." This lesson, among many others, would serve Werner well in his later academic studies in engineering and in his professional life.
Werner's interest in astronomy continued and grew throughout the years. As it did, he began to discover that not only he, but many of his friends who shared the interest, were frustrated with the poor quality of focusers in the marketplace that turned otherwise acceptable telescopes into inferior instruments. It wasn't long before he decided to put the skills and lessons his father taught him as a young man to work. When it came to his telescopes, there were no compromises. He would use his engineering and machining expertise to formulate and build a focuser that not only performed flawlessly, but that exhibited design characteristics that were extraordinarily pleasing to the eyes and touch. After months of planning and years of evolutionary and indeed revolutionary design alterations, the result was the Feather Touch®focuser, Starlight's premier product.
Astronomers worldwide rave about the Feather Touch's quality, workmanship, and timeless design. They talk about the uncanny mechanism that drives the focus tube in and out of its assembly with a precision, smoothness, and accuracy that can only be described as "therapeutic." Instead of encountering the ever present frustrations inherent in focusers of inferior quality, astronomers find themselves truly at peace with the night sky and their most precious equipment. You don't "use" a Starlight Feather Touch®focuser, you "experience" it.
Today, Starlight Instruments ships its products to all corners of the globe, and Feather Touch®focusers find themselves under the most pristine, dark and starry skies on Earth...on the best telescopes--from the Antarctic to the world's foremost astronomy events and star parties.
Yes, Brigitte and Werner have ventured a long way...and their memories of sitting with her grandfather on those enchanting summer nights, listening to his stories while pondering the mysteries of the night sky, still inspire them.
You'll discover this same inspiration built into each and every finely crafted Feather Touch®focuser Starlight Instruments makes.
